SILENT VOICES

Amidst the clamor of this intricate world, we've grown accustomed to hearing all kinds of voices,  yet often neglecting the voice of silence. Silence could be an expression of resistance, or a way one trying to make self-consolation. It allows us to directly experience genuine emotions in moments devoid of verbal expression. ‘Silent Voices’ is a duo exhibition between Lee.K and Ruo-Hsin Wu. Navigating the interplay between self and others, the artists refine the essence of silence through emotions, memories, and time. Lee.k employs dynamic lines and fantastical lighting to shape characters, while Ruo-Hsin Wu conveys the intricate inner emotions of her protagonist using rational colors against dark backgrounds. Although they both center on characters, their diverse artistic styles vividly reflect the enigmatic tension inherent in ‘silence.’

At this moment, silence transcends its role as a mere absence of speech, evolving into a subtle expression of concealed emotions. This exhibition beckons viewers to surpass linguistic barriers and immerse themselves in the meticulously crafted realm of silence. Let us embark on this journey to rediscover the forgotten voices and listen to the profound resonance deep within our souls.

Lee.K

Lee.K (b.1983, South Korea) works and lives in Andong. The central theme of his works predominantly revolves around highlighting the adverse aspects of language through the concept of "negative language." The interplay of soaring lines, vivid color blocks, and polished facial features in the compositions creates a distinct visual contrast, generating visual tension. Notably, the deliberately blurred or concealed "mouth" on the faces of the depicted characters stands out. This intentional obscuring disrupts the negative dissemination of language, allowing the emotions restrained by silence to dissipate internally, mitigating misunderstandings and violence triggered by words. It also signifies a transition from rejecting language to affirming the meaning of life. The artist's works inherently exude a sense of mystery and rhythm, recognizing the unique rational spirit of humanity and deepening the positive significance of silence.

Ruo-Hsin Wu

Ruo-Hsin Wu (b.1993) was born in Taiwan, China and now base in London. She is a visual artist who focuses on painting, drawing, and handmade animation. Wu holds a BA in Animation from Taipei National University of Arts and a MA in Visual Communication from Royal College of Art. Her work is usually driven by her personal experience, dealing with time, space, and memory, especially her childhood. Each piece of her work is a non-linear story made of fragments from the world around her, exploring the connections between objects in new environments and past memories, particularly those entwined with her childhood. This has led her to develop a narrative style marked by ambiguity, captivated by the profound construction of meaning in her art.
